Adam’s Peak
Sri Lanka’s holy mountain – this 2,234 meter high summit is one of Sri Lanka’s most incredible locations. Adam’s Peak is considered holy by all devotees of all major faiths of Sri Lanka. The Pilgrim season runs from the full moon in December to the full moon in May, during which time hundreds of pilgrims make the arduous climb every night. The ascent is usually begun at midnight. Climbing through the night will get you to the summit by dawn for an awe-inspiring sunrise. Pilgrims chanting prayers, the huge bell at the summit piercing the clear mountain air makeup the elements for a cultural highlight which will never be forgotten. During the pilgrim season the path is lit and small kiosks offer trekkers and pilgrims basic hot food, tea, coffee and water. During the rest of the year, the pathway is dark and no pilgrims are to be found, but the adventure and majesty of Adam’s Peak remain.
