Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is located in the central cultural region in close proximity to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the town of Habarana. The park is most special during the period May to September. Each year, during these months, with the onset of the dry season, most of the lakes in the region do go dry. The mighty Minneriya Lake too recedes. In its wake it reveals a lush green grassland which attracts multiple herds of wild elephants. Each evening allows the opportunity to see 200 – 300 elephants grazing by the lake. Large hungry bird flocks coexist peacefully with the elephants as they share the waterhole.
