Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s second medieval capital for nearly 100 years from the 1073. The main driving force of the development of Polonnaruwa was king Parakramabahu. The compact nature of the city in comparison to Anuradhapura and the remarkably well preserved ruins allow travelers to easily imagine the majesty and grandeur of this ancient city. The magnificent granite sculptures of the Lord Buddha housed at the Galvihare is one of the most special sites in the city.
